QUIC.cloud Now Using ALTCHA

You may have noticed that some of the options on your CDN Security dashboard have changed. Let’s take a look.

What’s New?

We’ve made a few changes to the CDN > CDN Config > Security area of your my.quic.cloud Dashboard.

To start, we’ve replaced Google’s reCAPTCHA with ALTCHA. This is a change we’ve implemented under the hood, and there is nothing you need to do to enable ALTCHA support.

Additionally, we now force the reCAPTCHA & WP Brute Force Defense setting to be ON at all times for your protection and to maintain the superior performance of our entire network. Since this setting cannot be changed, we’ve removed it from the Dashboard.

Additionally, we created a new WP Brute Force Defense section. These two screenshots show before and after the change.

A few settings have moved around, but aside from the aforementioned reCAPTCHA & WP Brute Force Defense setting, we have not removed anything from this screen.

As always, you can see our documentation for full details about everything you see here.

Why ALTCHA?

We switched away from Google’s reCAPTCHA v2 for a number of reasons:

  1. User experience: we like the simple check-a-box interface that ALTCHA provides. There are no time-consuming puzzles to solve, which can be a barrier to entry for some users.
  2. Performance: reCAPTCHA loads a number of external resources that can impact load time. While we prioritize security, we won’t do it at the expense of speed, if we can help it.
  3. Cost: while reCAPTCHA was once free, recent changes requiring legacy key migration to a paid platform may end up costing users exorbitant and unpredictable fees.

We switched QUIC.cloud over to ALTCHA a few weeks ago, and we’re happy with the change.

Conclusion

We are always looking for ways to improve our service and our security. The small changes we shared today are a part of that quest. If you experience any issues, our support team is standing by, ready to help.
